A complete mobile-friendly web redesign for a small local business focused on in-house system application, design, pricing, integration, project management, and local technical site services provided through staff technicians and strategic partner technicians.

Initial State:

We built our first prototype based off necessary app functions.Step 1. Visitors walk around the exhibit to see clearly marked custom dinosaur images that can be scanned on strategically placed IPads on mounted Gimbals.‍‍Step 2. After scanning the image, the app will notify the user that they’ve found a fossil and how many are left to find.‍Step 3. Each scannable image is located adjacent to the AR iPad Gimbal, allowing to see the dinosaur that they scanned.

Proposed Solution:

I found PUG HTML through NPM allowed straightforward editing and could utilize interactive components like forms. Since NPM did not have a monthly fee, this language base was the perfect starting place for our platform.

Competitive Analysis:

Since GLS is a sales company, easy access to the manufacturers and their products was a key aspect. Most other sites used a plugin called 'Your Lighting Brand' which listed all manufacturers in a searchable grid. However, clicking on any of the manufacturers opens a popup window, limiting the use of the manufacturers website.

Noteworthy findings

Most websites from competitors followed a similar path to information, so the page layout and hierarchy of the GLS site was developed first to give users a familiar experience.

After viewing the websites of direct competitors, related manufacturers, and other industry businesses, the IT lead and I were able to develop a site plan. With the competitive research and site plan, I was able to develop a low-fidelity website skeleton as a beginning point. This first step began to define the shape of the website.

Since simplicity and clarity were at the forefront of importance, I began by creating a low-fidelity wireframe for the website's main pages.

Moving forward:

Simple is better. After testing the different line cards, less information was preferred over more links.

Publishing and Maintaining

After the site was live, I made weekly or bi-weekly updates ranging from new blog posts, adding and updating manufacturer product links, and keeping an eye on web analytics.
